Mole Valley Design Code Documents Adopted

Four design code documents agreed

A local design code sets out requirements and guidance for applicants seeking planning permission. The Mole Valley Design Codes are specifically for small-scale development and householder applications, such as smaller flatted and householder development. The documents highlight design considerations - such as landscaping, density, height, architectural style and detail and materials – and should be used before a planning application is submitted to save time and money for both the applicant and MVDC.

There are four Mole Valley design codes: Ashtead, Bookham with Fetcham, Dorking and surrounding areas and Leatherhead. Each of the Mole Valley design codes divides the towns and villages into character areas and analyses the key features of character areas which, in turn, inform the requirements and guidance for that character area. The documents also include advice on general topics, such as amenity space and landscaping.

The design codes were the subject of an eight-week public consultation that ran over the summer; including drop-in events which ensured residents and stakeholders had the opportunity to view and comment on the documents content. This has helped refine the content of the design codes. In addition, Design South-East, a public-advice body who assist local planning authorities on design-related matters, engaged award-winning architects to assess, recommend amendments and test the design codes.
