Graffiti Busting Week
Mole Valley District Council (MVDC) is stepping up its response to the recent surge in graffiti across the district by launching a dedicated Graffiti Busting Week, commencing Monday 1 September 2025. This one-off initiative will see MVDC fund the removal of graffiti from private properties, as well as those it owns, in partnership with Amey as part of a concentrated effort to restore pride in our public spaces and support community wellbeing.
The decision follows a marked increase in graffiti incidents, particularly in Dorking. The police have classified this level of graffiti as a signal crime, meaning it not only encourages further antisocial behaviour, but that it also undermines residents’ and visitors’ sense of safety and security. Graffiti is a criminal offence and may result in penalties or imprisonment up six months. If you have any information about those responsible, please contact Surrey Police on 101.
During the Graffiti Busting Week, residents will be able to report graffiti on their property via MVDC’s website. Subject to the landowner granting consent and signing a waiver form Amey, on behalf of MVDC, will seek to include removal of the graffiti free of charge as part of this targeted clean-up operation.
Councillor Caroline Joseph, MVDC’s Cabinet Member for Services and Security, commented: “This initiative is about more than just cleaning walls – it is about restoring confidence in our public spaces and showing that we take antisocial behaviour seriously. We’re proud to support residents and businesses in tackling this issue.
“By taking swift and visible action, we hope to send a clear message that Mole Valley is a place where people feel safe, respected and proud of their surroundings. MVDC encourages all residents to report graffiti promptly and help spread the word about this initiative. Further details, including how to submit a report and consent for removal, are available on our website and social media channels.
“Graffiti found on utility company property - such as BT or Virgin Media boxes - should be reported directly to the company responsible. Private landowners are advised to check with their building insurance provider to see if criminal damage is covered under their policy”
