Thorncroft Bridge repairs - Leatherhead

MVDC Cabinet to consider capital budget reallocation for repairs to Thorncroft Bridge in Leatherhead

On 10 and 24 November 2026 respectively, Mole Valley District Council (MVDC) Scrutiny and Cabinet are recommended to approve £240,000 of capital budget (reallocated from a dilapidations underspend) for repairs to the Thorncroft Bridge in Leatherhead.

The Thorncroft Bridge Leatherhead is a concrete beam and slab bridge spanning an intersection of the River Mole, primarily used by pedestrians and light vehicle traffic.

An inspection to determine the condition of the bridge has been undertaken and Cabinet is asked to consider funding for those repairs categorised as needing repair, replacing or further investigation.

Works include:

  • Repairs to the coping stones of the bridge pillars and listing walls

  • Replacement of sections of spalled brick to all areas of walls

  • Resurfacing of wearing courses and repointing of degraded wall sections

  • Reduction of speed limit to the bridge to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists

  • Improvements to signage and road markings (to reinforce the speed restriction and traffic guidance)

  • Installation of lifesaving equipment

  • Removal of obstructions to the riverbed and associated banks.

Funding for the works is proposed to be from a reallocation of the Leatherhead Leisure Centre dilapidations budget, which completed with an underspend.

Cabinet is additionally recommended to proceed with the drawdown of funds, and to procure and undertake the works.

Cllr Keira Vyvyan-Robinson, MVDC Cabinet Member for Property and Projects, said: “The Thorncroft Bridge in Leatherhead is a much loved and crucial piece of infrastructure linking residents and businesses from the southern end of Leatherhead to local businesses and the area of the Leisure Centre, Football Club and Cricket Club. The proposals will improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists, and ensure the bridge remains safe and fit for purpose for all to use.”
