479 Bus Service - Arriva to cease this service mid-December - Update

The Residents' Association has been informed that Arriva UK Bus is intending to cease operating bus services in Surrey from mid-December 2021. This includes the essential 479 Service.

SCC recognise this will be an uncertain time for Arriva staff, and service users. They are very aware that many residents rely on these services to get them to work, school, medical appointments and to access a wide range of other services. SCC will therefore closely monitor this situation on behalf of all our residents.

Arriva operates 16 routes using approximately 50 buses in Surrey. These routes serve busy towns including Guildford, Woking and Camberley, along with a range of other places. We’re hopeful that Arriva can progress discussions with other bus companies who might want to fulfil these services. We’re also liaising with relevant partners in the areas including district and borough councils.

SCC remains committed to supporting public transport and making it as easy as possible for people to rely less on their cars.

We therefore have a bus service until mid-December by which time we can only hope that SCC can find replacement companies for each of the routes, which is going to be  huge task.

Will let you know as soon as we hear any more news.

UPDATE @ 14th October 2021 from SCC

Following the announcement by Arriva UK Bus that they are intending to cease operating bus services in Surrey, I am delighted to learn today that they are in advance stage of discussions with Falcon Coaches to take over their operations later this year. This is great news for both Arriva staff and bus service users.

We are very aware that many of our residents rely on these services to get them to work, school, medical appointments and to access a wide range of other services and have been working with Arriva to achieve a positive outcome on behalf of all our residents.

SCC remains committed to supporting public transport and making it as easy as possible for people to rely less on their cars.

Kind regards
