Ashtead Level Crossing and the Footbridge (Update)

Google Streetview

Once again Google camera vehicles are patrolling Ashtead taking pictures of all roads with the exception of Private Roads. It appears they are even recording sites known to have had blocked images in the past. To complain and get the image blocked email the following address, but be aware blocking your view will usually block the view 180 degrees opposite as well, so it might be best to consult your neighbours first. Verge damage in Bramley Way by new Aquatics Store

Following up on some complaints from residents, the ARA wrote to Maidenhead Aquatics and received the following response to our question regarding the damage seen to verges and the parking of contractors cars adjacent to the junction with the A24.

Thank you for your recent email.

After reading this, I fully appreciate how some of the local residents are currently feeling and rest assured we will do everything possible to rectify these plus prevent any further problems at Bramley Corner. In fact, we did foresee that some potential concerns may arise due to the sheer scale of work involved to renovate the site and as a result we did write to all the local houses along Bramley Way to assure the neighbours that we would be as considerate as we could. Apologies if you didn't receive a copy of this letter (and we were not aware of the Ashtead Residents' Association) so I have attached a copy of it in this mail in case you haven't seen it.

To address the two specific points raised in your mail, I would like to assure you that we will indeed be landscaping the grass verges once all of the work has been completed (we will fill-in all the ruts with top soil and put down grass seed to 'make good'). I'm not too sure if you were aware but we have also had to increase all the utility supplies into the site and this has meant that the relevant companies have excavated the ground between the road and our boundary. As you rightly pointed out, we certainly wish for our store frontage to look the best it possibly can so will do all that is required to achieve this! Once we're finished with the renovation our aim is to produce a much less congested, safer and tidier Bramley Corner.

With respect to any contractor parking, I'm in full agreement that this has caused some safety issues. No doubt you can appreciate the volume of remedial work that is involved at Bramley Corner. We have tried our best to control the flow of traffic and where the vehicles are parking if at all possible. I think we had the most difficulties during the resurfacing of the car park and erection of the new gates as both meant there was no access to our car park at the rear. Now this work has been completed I hope both the volume and location of any vehicles is once again at a bearable level. We have already spoken to all the workforce first thing Monday morning to remind everyone of the points raised. I will also again contact our suppliers to reinforce the point concerning any deliveries at Bramley Corner. Unfortunately, as you can appreciate, some of our deliveries are/have been made by independent hauliers and couriers and try as best as we can to control them, they are very much a law unto themselves. However with a little more education, I'm certain that progression will be made here.

I sincerely hope that this response may appease the concerns that some of the neighbours may still have and if at any point you wish to contact us, either in person or via email, then we would very much welcome any further comments. On a positive note, we have been inundated by a large amount of positive feedback from many of the local residents. Looking forward, we aim to be open for business within the next 2 weeks and we are confident the store will then be something that will bring back life to what was previously a very demoralised area of the neighbourhood.

It is good to see such a positive response to our enquiry and we are sure that this corner of Ashtead will be greatly improved once work has been completed.

Volunteers wanted for the Mole Valley Big Weekend Olympic Event

The Mole Valley Big Weekend is an exciting programme of free all day events taking place across the weekend of the 28th & 29th July 2012 in celebration of the Men's and Women's Olympic Road Cycling Road Races speeding through Mole Valley.

The Big Weekend is set to be a spectacle of fun, music, dance and sport in both Dorking and Leatherhead High Streets and across our live sites at Meadowbank Recreation Ground Dorking and Red House Gardens

An event of this size is unprecedented within Mole Valley and would only be possible with the help of volunteers. In view of this we would like to extend an invitation to Residents Association members to volunteer as Senior and Standard Marshals and play a part in the Big Weekend.

The majority of the role of a Marshal will encompass answering questions, giving advice and keeping an eye on the crowds, with volunteer Marshals being the eyes and ears of the event organisers. Role profiles for Senior and Standard Marshals are attached.

The ability to quickly, clearly and affectively communicate with the crowd is key to the safety of the event and a key part of the role of the Marshal. Training will take place in early July during the evening to ensure all volunteers are well prepared prior to the event and is likely to take around 3 hours.

More information on the Mole Valley Big Weekend can be found at www.facebook.com/molevalleybigweekend and http://www.molevalley.gov.uk/index.cfm?articleid=12157

If any Ashtead Resident is interested in volunteering their time to help with the Mole Valley Big Weekend please get in touch with James Bernardo, 2012 Events & Project Co-Ordinator,
Partnerships and Community Development, Mole Valley District Council with any questions.

The Railway Crossing and the Emergency Services

At the Spring Meeting last night Paula Hancock asked a question of the visiting Leatherhead Fire Station Crew Manager regarding attendance of a fire occurring 'over' the Level Crossing and whether the protocol with Network Rail was working.

Worryingly, he said on the occasions he had been called to cross the railway he and his crew had to wait at the gates until the trains had passed and that Network Rail were reluctant to delay trains as it attracted fines from the operating companies.

Councillor John Northcott (Common Ward) advised the meeting that he and David Baker (ARA Committee Member) had visited the Ambulance Control Room at Banstead earlier in the month and had seen for themselves how efficient their system was at alerting the despatcher to the fact that the call was coming from 'over' the crossing and depending upon the severity of the case they had the option of alerting Network Rail to try, where possible, to delay the trains to ease the passage of the Ambulance.

It is accepted that when trains have passed their 'fail safe' point, it is not possible to stop or delay the trains, but the protocol was seen to be very much 'alive'. Figures provided before the visit revealed that there had been no significant delays to ambulances on life-threatening calls.

In view of the Fire Officer's comments, John Northcott is to urgently review the situation with the Chief Fire Officer. It is understood that the Crew Manager was operational staff and not involved in the despatch of Fire Engines and therefore may not be privy to Control Centre procedures but nevertheless it is very important this be clarified as soon as possible and this site will be updated as soon as John Northcott has the relevant information.

Walking Waitresses raising money for Charity

The Residents' Association has received the following request for assistance in publicising the following. We wish them well in their endeavours. To donate via PayPal visit their web site below and click on the PayPal link.

Hi, my name is Emily Barrett and I am one of the Walking Waitresses!

Walking_WaitressesWe are three waitresses from Superfish in Ashtead, Surrey and are training to walk the 230 miles from London to Paris in late July 2012. Our goal is to complete this challenge in just 10 days, raising a minimum of £4000 to divide equally between our 4 chosen local charities; Headley Court (with Help the Hero's), Count the Kicks, The Royal Marsden and Kings College Charity.

To raise money we are organising a prize draw, for which loads of local businesses have already donated prizes for; Leatherhead Leisure Centre, Chelsea Football training grounds, Birdworld, House of Fraser and Bockets Farm to name a few! We are also hoping to have car washes, bake sales and hopefully many other events!

I was hoping you could help us to spread the word; the Ashtead Residents Association is very prominent in Ashtead and it would be a great way for us to get through to the many residents of Ashtead who do not have access to computers. We will have leaflets, posters and collection boxes ready for distribution soon.

For more information, we have a website and twitter account for exposure and for donations through PayPal.

Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing back from you,

Emily Barrett and the Walking Waitresses

Ashtead Level Crossing & the Footbridge (Update)

18/11/2011 - Thanks to Cllr. John Northcott (Common Ward) the telephones at the Level Crossing have been reinstated. Until recently the telephones were not operational, partly caused by the abuse the signalmen received from drivers and pedestrians at the Level Crossing.

John Northcott highlighted the positive use the telephones have as well as his safety concerns and Network Rail have relented and reinstated the phones.

Whilst this is a positive result, the facility can just as easily be withdrawn again if further complaints are received following abuse of Network Rail staff by members of the public.

Few residents are aware that as well as the busy Ashtead Crossing, the signalman is in charge of several other busy crossings. It is a hugely responsible job and the last thing they need is the distraction of members of the public verbally abusing them.

__________________

It has just been confirmed by the Area Manager at Southern Railway that should the Level Crossing barriers be in the down position for more than 5 minutes the gateman has authority to allow pedestrians access to use the footbridge on the platforms.

This should alleviate sme of the concerns expressed by residents and demonstrates that Southern are willing to bend a little and recognise the particular set of problems that the Ashtead Crossing represents.

Old Photograph of the Ashtead Greys

Ashtead_GreysAn ex-resident of Ashtead now living in Devon emailed the web site with a plea for a photograph of the Ashtead Greys. This was a photo taken up at Horsemans' Sunday on Epsom Downs in the early sixties. It spent some years on display in Henrys, Craddocks Parade and was a photo of a line of grey ponies from Ashtead Riding School with their very smart riders in black jackets. Most of the ponies at the riding school were greys, this was their theme at the time Freda Parker ran the school from their premises in Ottways Lane. The riding school eventually moved to Ashtead Woods Road when the site at Ottways Lane was sold for development.

Since this contact and the appeal on this web site, Patsy Blair has provided us with a picture of the Ashtead Greys on Horsemans' Sunday in September 1960 and it appears she used to lead the above ex-resident around the ring teaching her to ride on her pony Frosty!!

If anyone else has a memory of the Ashtead Greys perhaps they would like to contact the This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and he will post them on the web site.
