Overdale 1943

Picture courtesy of Colin Chatfield who writes "The block of four houses in Overdale from 119 on the left going towards the woods.  The gap on the left was intended for one house but after the war two were built.  119 was purchased by Des & Marjorie Chatfield in August 1939 for under £1000.00!!!!  I was born in May 1940 in the front bedroom."

Overdale 1943

Picture courtesy of Colin Chatfield who writes, "The photo with the horse was taken in 1943 outside 119 Overdale looking opposite well before the 'new' houses were built early in 1947.  I well remember playing on the building site aged six and getting covered in the wet sticky clay of the foundations.  On the left is Des Chatfield who became a Lt. Colonel during the war, my brother Martin aged 5 riding and hidden behind the horses head is Mr Brogan the owner."

Colin Chatfield has e mailed the web site with the photos above and has asked for assistance on the following: -

"Does anyone else remember the acorns falling on the tin roof of St. Michaels old hut during Mass?  And who recalls so vividly the dance around the bonfire on the common opposite the pond and Craddocks Parade in the 1945 victory celebrations.

I am also interested to hear from anyone who went to St Andrews Convent school in The Grange in the period 1945-1947 and remembers Sister Angela. My older brother Martin Chatfield started his school life at the Knoll building."

Colin Chatfield
Born in 119 Overdale, May 1940.
